Evolution Of MEMS Technology
There was a time we were using the bulky , spacious, and costlier devices for our daily work and needs.But as the time passed the things got smaller ,affordable and integrated in size . All credit to the growing technology.
MEMS (Micro ElectroMechanical Systems)
The technology in the 21st century that completely revolutionized the Consumer and Industrial Products by the hybridization of the microelectronics with the micromachining technology.
MEMS is basically a process to create the Integrated Systems that combine mechanical and electrical components. These devices ranges from few micrometers to few millimeters .
The Need of creating these devices was to reduce the bulk mechanical components that were difficult to carry like the car using the obsolete airbag systems with the ARCS system with some pneumatic devices installed in the car which occupied a lot of space in the car .
This was replaced by the MEMS devices which were installed in the front of the steering wheel .
The need of creating these devices using MEMS Technology was to control and sense and actuate and generate the effects on larger scale.
In the MEMS technology, Electronics devices are fabricated using Computer chip IC Technology and
MicroMechanical devices are fabricated using the MicroMachining process .MEMS consists of Micro mechanical structures like gauges , motors etc ,Microsensors , Microactuators and MicroElectronics devices integrated on some Silicon chip.
Applications : In Medical System, ABS ,Automation and the Inkjet Printers .
Technology moved and the MEMS technology was replaced by the MOEMS .
MOEMS ( Micro Opto Electro Mechanical System )
The optical elements were added to the MEMS technology and another Application Technology was introduced .The optical devices that were used are LED ‘s and Photodiodes .
The Application in which the MOEMS technology is used is the Digital Light Projectors .
The time passed and the technology once again decreased in the size .
It was now the turn to use the nano technology.
The Hybridization of this newer technology and the MEMS technology provided the NEMS Technology .
NEMS was actually the combination of the Electronic and Mechanical components on the nano scale.Bringing the functionality of electrical and mechanical components on the nano scale was named NEMS.
Applications : Atomic Force Microscope
NEMS Relay and NEMS Spectrometer.
The technology is still moving and it’s now the time to see what’s newer thing is going to be provided to us and what it’s size is going to be .
